Why dictate in Google Docs

Long documents are where dictation saves the most time: a first draft, a report, an essay. The trick is getting text you don’t have to clean up afterwards.

Google Docs has its own Voice typing (Tools → Voice typing). Google says it works in recent Chrome, Edge and Safari, and that its punctuation commands — “period”, “comma”, “new paragraph” — are in English only. It types the words you say.

Wisper works differently: punctuation goes in by itself, fillers and false starts come out, and spoken corrections are applied. It also works the same way outside Docs, in every app on your Mac.

How to dictate in Google Docs with Wisper

  1. Install Wisper from the Mac App Store (macOS 14 Sonoma or later). Allow the microphone, and switch Wisper on under Accessibility so it can paste for you.
  2. Click into the paragraph in your Doc.
  3. Hold right ⌥ Option (or Fn, or ⌥W — your choice) and talk the way you would to a person.
  4. Let go. Wisper pastes clean text where your cursor is.

That’s the whole loop. For longer thoughts, double-tap the hotkey to go hands-free and tap again to stop. To change text you already wrote, select it, hold right ⌥ and say what to change — “shorter”, “friendlier”, “in Spanish”.

The style that fits: Default

For documents, Default is the one: it keeps your wording and just makes it clean, so your draft still sounds like you.

Need a word-for-word record, like an interview quote? Exact words keeps what you said as spoken, with only light cleanup.

Example · A paragraph in a quarterly report
You say

“the main reason churn went up in Q3 is, um, the price change, we raised the monthly plan and, uh, people on monthly left faster than, than people on yearly”

Wisper types · Default

The main reason churn went up in Q3 is the price change. We raised the monthly plan, and people on monthly left faster than people on yearly.

Tips for Google Docs

Draft first, format later

Say a full paragraph, then the next. Add headings and styles with the keyboard once the words are down.

Tighten a paragraph by voice

Select it, hold right ⌥ and say “shorter” or “more formal”. Wisper replaces it in place; ⌘Z undoes it.

Write in another language

Pick an output language and talk in yours — useful for a doc your team reads in English. 30 output languages with Pro.

Questions

Does Google Docs have voice typing?

Yes: Tools → Voice typing. Google says it works in recent Chrome, Edge and Safari, and that voice commands such as “period” and “new paragraph” work only in English.

How is Wisper different from Docs’ Voice typing?

Wisper adds punctuation without commands, removes fillers, applies spoken corrections and can change tone or language. It also works in every app, not only in Docs.

Can I use both?

Yes. They don’t conflict. Many people use Docs’ Voice typing for quick bits and a hotkey app for real drafts.
