Why dictate in Microsoft Word
Word is where the long, careful writing happens: reports, proposals, letters. That’s exactly where typing speed becomes the bottleneck and dictation pays off most.
Word for Mac has a Dictate button (Home → Dictate, or ⌥F1). Microsoft says it’s only for Microsoft 365 subscribers and needs a reliable internet connection.
Wisper works in any version of Word and every other app on your Mac. It cleans what you say as it goes — fillers out, corrections applied — and can make a paragraph more formal with one key.
How to dictate in Microsoft Word with Wisper
- Install Wisper from the Mac App Store (macOS 14 Sonoma or later). Allow the microphone, and switch Wisper on under Accessibility so it can paste for you.
- Click into the place in your document where the text should go.
- Hold right ⌥ Option (or Fn, or ⌥W — your choice) and talk the way you would to a person.
- Let go. Wisper pastes clean text where your cursor is.
That’s the whole loop. For longer thoughts, double-tap the hotkey to go hands-free and tap again to stop. To change text you already wrote, select it, hold right ⌥ and say what to change — “shorter”, “friendlier”, “in Spanish”.
The style that fits: Default
Default keeps your wording and makes it clean, which is what you want in a document you’ll edit anyway.
For letters and formal documents, dictate in Default and then press ⌥2 for Formal on the paragraph. For quotes or minutes, Exact words stays closest to what was said.
“we propose to run the pilot in two stores first, uh, Berlin and Hamburg, for six weeks, and then, depending on the numbers, roll it out to, um, all twelve stores in the spring”
We propose to run the pilot in two stores first, Berlin and Hamburg, for six weeks. Depending on the numbers, we would then roll it out to all twelve stores in the spring.
Press a style’s number key while you talk to switch styles before you let go. Free includes 5 style presets; Pro adds unlimited and custom styles.
