Why dictate in WhatsApp
Voice notes are fast to send and slow to receive: the other person has to stop, put on headphones and listen to all of it. A text message they can read in five seconds.
Dictation gives you both. You talk the way you would in a voice note, and they get a short, readable message. On a Mac, that works in WhatsApp’s desktop app and in WhatsApp Web.
How to dictate in WhatsApp with Wisper
- Install Wisper from the Mac App Store (macOS 14 Sonoma or later). Allow the microphone, and switch Wisper on under Accessibility so it can paste for you.
- Click into the WhatsApp message box.
- Hold right ⌥ Option (or Fn, or ⌥W — your choice) and talk the way you would to a person.
- Let go. Wisper pastes clean text where your cursor is.
That’s the whole loop. For longer thoughts, double-tap the hotkey to go hands-free and tap again to stop. To change text you already wrote, select it, hold right ⌥ and say what to change — “shorter”, “friendlier”, “in Spanish”.
The style that fits: Casual
Casual sounds like a text from a friend: short, relaxed, lowercase where it fits. It’s made for chats like WhatsApp.
For family and anything you want to sound exactly like you, Default keeps your words and just cleans them up.
“hey, um, are you guys still coming saturday, uh, we’re doing dinner at seven, don’t bring anything, just yourselves”
hey! you guys still coming saturday? dinner at 7 — don’t bring anything, just yourselves 🙂
Press a style’s number key while you talk to switch styles before you let go. Free includes 5 style presets; Pro adds unlimited and custom styles.
Tips for WhatsApp
Write to family in their language
Pick an output language and talk in yours. Wisper writes the message in theirs — any of 30 languages (Pro). Switch with ⌃⌥L or from the Wisper bar.
Save what you repeat
Your address, a meeting link, bank details for splitting a bill: save them as Snippets and just say “my address”.
Same habit on your phone
On iPhone, the Wisper keyboard works inside WhatsApp. On Android, the Wisper bubble floats over the chat.
Questions
Does it work in the WhatsApp app and in the browser?
Yes. Wisper pastes wherever your cursor is, so it works in the WhatsApp app for Mac and in WhatsApp Web in Safari, Chrome or any other browser.
Does Wisper send the message for me?
No. Wisper pastes the text where your cursor is and stops there. Read it, then send it yourself.
Is this the same as WhatsApp’s voice messages?
No. A voice message sends a recording. Wisper turns what you say into text, so the other person reads it instead of listening.
Can I use emoji?
The Casual style can add an emoji where it fits. You can always add more from the keyboard before you send.
