Why dictate in Cursor

Working with an AI coding agent is mostly writing: describing the bug, the expected behaviour, the files involved, what not to touch. The more you explain, the better the result — and the more you have to type.

Saying it is faster and you naturally include more detail. Wisper works in Cursor’s chat and agent panel, in the editor itself, and the same way in VS Code, Windsurf, Zed, Xcode or anything else with a cursor.

How to dictate in Cursor with Wisper

  1. Install Wisper from the Mac App Store (macOS 14 Sonoma or later). Allow the microphone, and switch Wisper on under Accessibility so it can paste for you.
  2. Click into Cursor’s chat or agent box — or the line in your file.
  3. Hold right ⌥ Option (or Fn, or ⌥W — your choice) and talk the way you would to a person.
  4. Let go. Wisper pastes clean text where your cursor is.

That’s the whole loop. For longer thoughts, double-tap the hotkey to go hands-free and tap again to stop. To change text you already wrote, select it, hold right ⌥ and say what to change — “shorter”, “friendlier”, “in Spanish”.

The style that fits: AI Prompt

AI Prompt turns your explanation into a clear instruction for the agent: the problem, the likely cause, what to do.

For comments and TODOs in the file, use Coding — it writes them in the shape of a code comment. Pro adds a vibe-code mode and advanced AI cleanup.

Example · A bug report to Cursor’s agent
You say

“ok so in the settings screen, um, the toggle for notifications doesn’t save, uh, I think it’s the user defaults key, can you find where it’s written and fix it, and add a test”

Wisper types · AI Prompt

On the settings screen, the notifications toggle doesn’t save. I think the UserDefaults key is wrong. Find where it’s written, fix it, and add a test.

Press a style’s number key while you talk to switch styles before you let go. Free includes 5 style presets; Pro adds unlimited and custom styles.

Tips for Cursor

Put your code words in the Dictionary

Framework names, class names, internal services: add “SwiftUI”, “Kubernetes” or “RevenueCat” once and they stop coming out as English words.

Pick a hotkey your editor doesn’t use

Wisper offers Fn, right ⌥ or ⌥W. If your keybindings use one of them, pick another.

Change style mid-sentence

Press a style’s number while you talk to switch — say, from AI Prompt to Coding — before you let go.

Questions

Does it work in VS Code, Windsurf and Xcode?

Yes. Wisper pastes wherever your cursor is on your Mac: editors, their chat panels, terminals and browsers.

Will it mangle function names?

Add the names you use to the Dictionary and Wisper spells them your way. For exact identifiers, typing is still quicker — dictate the explanation around them.

Does it send the prompt?

No. Wisper pastes the text and stops. Read it, then press Enter.
