Wispr Flow is a good app, and its free plan is a fair way to try it: 2,000 words a week on desktop, and a smaller weekly allowance on your phone. If that runs out on Wednesday, or you don’t want another $12–15 a month subscription, you have options — but “free” means very different things depending on the app.
There are three kinds of free:
- Built-in dictation — free, no word limits, but it types what you said, “um”s and all.
- Free tiers of AI dictation apps — clean-up included, with a daily, weekly or one-time limit.
- Local and open-source tools — unlimited, run on your own computer, more setup.
This guide is only about the free plans. If you’re choosing an app to pay for, our Wispr Flow alternatives comparison covers platforms, offline and paid prices for eight apps, and Wisper vs Wispr Flow goes head to head. All facts below are from each company’s own site, checked October 2026.

Built-in and free forever
These cost nothing and have no word counts. What you give up is clean-up: you get your words as spoken, punctuated, and you fix the rest by hand.
Apple Dictation (Mac, iPhone, iPad). Turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard on a Mac, or Settings → General → Keyboard on iPhone. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout, but it stops after 30 seconds without speech, and in many languages it’s processed on the device. Our step-by-step: how to dictate on a Mac.
Windows voice typing. Press Windows key + H in any text field. Microsoft says you need to be connected to the internet, and there’s an automatic punctuation setting.
Gboard (Android, iPhone). Tap the mic at the top of Google’s keyboard. On recent Pixel phones, Google adds more: automatic punctuation and voice commands, and on the Pixel 11 series a feature called Rambler that removes filler words. Details in our Android talk-to-text guide.
Google Docs voice typing. Tools → Voice typing, in Chrome, Edge or Safari. It only types into Google Docs, not into other apps.
How far it gets you: all the way, if you mostly dictate short replies and searches. It runs out of road when you write long messages, because cleaning up raw dictation eats the time you saved.
Free tiers of AI dictation apps
These clean up as you talk — fillers out, punctuation and formatting in — and put a cap on how much.
Wispr Flow (for reference). 2,000 words a week on Mac and Windows, resetting every Sunday. Its help center currently lists phone limits separately: on iPhone, free use slows down after 550 words a week and stops at 750; on Android, it slows after 1,000 and stops at 1,500. It notes that mobile limits are set by Flow and can change. New users also get a 14-day Pro trial.
Wisper. 20 dictations a day on Mac and iPhone, 5 a day on Android, with basic AI clean-up, 5 style presets and one language. Because it counts dictations rather than words and resets daily, a long voice note costs the same as a short one. Pro adds unlimited dictation, all languages and translation, and custom styles.
Willow. Its pricing page lists unlimited dictation on a lighter speech model (“Frontier Mini”), limited personalization and 20 uses a week of Scribe, its select-and-speak editing. It runs on Mac, Windows and iPhone; Android is listed as coming soon.
Aqua Voice. 1,000 free words with no card required. The pricing page doesn’t say it resets, so treat it as a trial of the full product rather than a plan to live on.
Typeless. A free plan with “limited words each week”. Typeless doesn’t publish the number.
How far it gets you: for one person writing messages and a few emails a day, a daily or generous weekly allowance usually covers weekdays. A one-time allowance is a test drive.
Local and open source
Superwhisper. The free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, up to two modes, custom vocabulary and text replacements — but no AI processing, so no rewriting or tone. New users get 3,000 words of Pro features to try. Because models run on your device, this is the strongest free option if you need offline dictation.
VoiceInk. An open-source Mac app under the GPL-3.0 license: if you’re comfortable building it yourself, it’s free. Otherwise it’s sold as a one-time license.
MacWhisper. Has a free version; the Pro license (€64 once) unlocks more. Its site doesn’t list exactly which features are free. MacWhisper is mainly about transcribing files and meetings locally on a Mac.
How far it gets you: unlimited raw dictation, as long as you’re on the right computer and happy with setup.
Which free plan fits you
Illustrative math, not research: if a typical message is 50–100 words, 2,000 words a week is about 20–40 messages, and 750 words is 7–15.
- A few quick replies a day: built-in dictation. Free, unlimited, good enough.
- Messages and emails every workday: a free AI tier that resets often — daily or weekly — so you don’t hit the wall mid-week.
- Writing for hours: no free plan will hold. Superwhisper’s local models are unlimited but raw; otherwise you’re looking at a paid plan.
- Offline: Superwhisper’s local models, Apple Dictation in many languages, or Wisper on Android, which has an offline mode.
- Phone first: check the mobile limits specifically — several apps are more generous on desktop.
Stretching a free plan
- Use built-in dictation for the short stuff and save AI dictations for the messages where clean-up matters.
- Say it once, in full. A complete thought in one dictation beats three short starts.
- Save repeated text as snippets so you’re not dictating your address or link every day.
When it’s worth paying
If you hit the free limit every week, you’re the person the paid plans are for. Yearly individual prices, from each company’s pricing page: Wisper $49.99, Superwhisper $84.99, Aqua Voice $96, Wispr Flow, Willow and Typeless $144. Monthly is different: Superwhisper ($8.49) and Aqua ($10) cost less than Wispr Flow ($15), and Wisper’s monthly plan is $19.99.
Try two free plans on the same week of real messages. The one you stop noticing is the one to keep.
Questions
Is there a completely free alternative to Wispr Flow?
Yes. Apple Dictation (Mac, iPhone), Windows voice typing (Windows + H), Gboard voice typing (Android, iPhone) and Google Docs voice typing are free with no word limits, but they don’t clean up fillers or change tone. Superwhisper’s free plan is unlimited with local models, without AI modes.
How many words do you get on Wispr Flow’s free plan?
Its pricing page lists 2,000 words a week on desktop and limited weekly use on mobile. Its help center currently says free use slows down after 550 words a week and stops at 750 on iPhone, and slows after 1,000 and stops at 1,500 on Android.
Which free dictation app has AI clean-up?
Wisper (daily dictations with basic AI clean-up), Willow (unlimited on a lighter model), Aqua Voice (1,000 words in total) and Wispr Flow (weekly words) all clean up speech on their free plans. Built-in dictation and Superwhisper’s free local models don’t.
Is Wisper free?
Wisper has a free plan with 20 dictations a day on Mac and iPhone and 5 on Android, in one language, with basic AI clean-up. Pro is $49.99 a year with a 3-day free trial.
